NORMAN CONQUEST 2066
The first phase involves cutting the spacecraft out of the background image, tracing outlines, and working out the overall shapes of the ship.
A very rough 3-dimensional model is made in paper card.
Then it's a case of tweaking and re-tweaking to refine it until it matches the original image view as closely as possible.
Sketches, photos of the card models and notes were sent to Chris Foss who advised on overall shapes and details not shown in his painting.
Initial sketches and outlines of original image to get a clearer view of the shapes.
First rough paper model mock-up, which was then cut up and flattened out to use as a tracing image for first plan drawings.
First plan drawings, still guessing at much of the shape.
Plans and black markings printed onto yellow card to make 2nd draft mock-up.
Photos of 2nd draft paper model.
Red tracing lines over original picture, overlaid onto paper model to see how close the main shapes are. (About 60% there).
Notes for myself and Chris to show where paper model needs adjusting.
Chris kindly made notes on shapes and details over printouts I sent him.
Detailed notes on fins and nose from Chris.
Second paper card model following tweaks
Couple of minor adjustments still, such as narrowing the top deck at rear.
The bridge bulge on top will be
built by eye, based on Chris's sketches.
Red outline overlay of original image over 2nd card model.
Minor tweaks to rear section and onto finished plan drawings.
Final plan drawings. Scaled up to 44cm ship length
and traced onto plastic card to start build proper.
